Getting there!

Well now it is Saturday, this past week life kinda got in the way of my workouts and such is life. It did seem to stress me out a little bit or maybe alot of bit ;-) But I quickly remember where my priorities lie and that is with my family first. So, when it comes to my son and my dog both being sick in the same week, I must take care of them first, and my workouts can wait.
So this past week I to the duathlon in which was a pretty intense race, then a mile swim on Monday, Tuesday was just a run as much as I wanted the bike I had other business to take care of. So a 4mile run was awright!
Wednesday hot yoga (stretch and strengthen) this probably hands down was one of the best stress relievers I had all week, I came out feeling like I had just had an all over massage, I actually think it was better than a massage, it goes for about 80minutes a great detoxifier and workout, all the stress and tension felt like it was completely gone.
Thursday, I took off just tired from the whole week, and Friday was an hour swim in a semi-cold pool but definitely feel like I am getting stronger on the swim, I have got to get some headphones, I think music would help tremendously for the swim.
Today met my friends for an 8miler at the canal, absolutely beautiful day, my calves esp, the left really tightened up on me, which has not happened much, so was thinking it could be from the kickboard the night before, or maybe like we were talking Mau Mau it was the banana creme pie and crust, to much sugar not enough potassium LOL. Good run my friends, thanks Christine and Laureen, LGO was the treat to follow. What a great day!

Wow Time Flies!!

Ok so really I think my best bet is just to blog when I have time and the feeling hits me, it has been at least 10 days since I last blogged and mostly I have been training, working and just trying to have fun in life! Seriously we have to have fun, and just because Im training for an Ironman I will not allow this to get to serious and no fun, then it just isnt worth it.

Ya know the whole thing, life is to short, and truly it is, we need to enjoy the simple things, just like today, I think one of the best parts of my training which entailed participating in the Desert Classic Duathlon out past Fountain Hills, first is the whole adventure of it, I am a big adventure person, love to try new things, and secondly just the whole experience of doing something you have never done before, but my favorite was watching the kids come in and the oldest guy out there and 81 year old man, that is inspirational to me, my heart is just touched by that!! And of course the sheer beauty of the desert and watching the sun come up, perfect weather, perfect day, tough course for me though!!
So Im just going to go through my training quickly for the past week or so, here we g0:

Beginning from Feb. 12th a brick workout which was a spinning class geared towards hills and a run on the treadmill for 4miles, not bad, would rather be outside. Friday was off. Saturday the 14th was Skirt Chasers run, it was fun and enjoyed it this is what it is all about, down at Tempe down lake, so good training, 5k,. of course my garman clocked me a bit faster then the chip but they used the gun at the beginning and not your chip so you lost a bit of time if you were in the back of the pack. Sunday long bike with Christine we did a 40 miler, the best part riding through cave creek town and stopping for coffee and food ;-) Then swam a mile that afternoon. I just wish the water was a little warmer in the outdoor pool, I don't like swimming indoors.

Tuesday Brick with Laureen, 20 mile ride and 3.25 mile run felt good oh and swam for 30min so a mini tri. Took Wed. off. Thurs. Spinning for 60 min and run, Friday Mile Swim, Saturday 6 mile run at canal and Sunday brings me to my Duathlon, never had done one it was fun, again the first part was trails, and the first section in sand, OMG I thought I was running at the beach but no ocean in sight, glad it didnt last long, 3.7 miles then a 21 mile bike first 2 miles felt tough my legs were bricky and it was an incline then downhill from there but bumpy road for first 6 miles, the last half was treacherous, uphill most of the way with some rollin hills in between, wow I have some work to do on the bike. Then transition for a 2.5 mile run, pretty tired at this point and they were right when they said save some for the end, there was a straight up incline, I mean a hike up most people walked that section, so glad when it was done, but happy that I did it and had a great experience, thanks Christine, we did it!!!

Mini Tri Tuesday

OK so today I was thinking hmmm....pretty cold outside 44degrees, I was home enjoying the warmth of my house, and thinking yea, a spinning class at they gym and run and swim after sounds good, all in the comfort of my gym. Thought I will get lots done at home and go to the evening class, when I get a call from Mau Mau, begging me to go with her outside cycling, man she is hard core. Im like well if it gets beyond 50degrees I will think about it. It did get to 50 degrees but not much more, I am a sucker for punishment, really I just love anything outside..
So, she talked me into it, I layered up, I mean three layers, I do not like the cold, either do my hands or feet, but I knew i would rather be outside to get the fresh air in which Arizona has to offer, HA!
So we meet at LTF about 315p, and the first think I hear out of LM is oh it is sooo cold, and Im like Mau, do not even say a word ;-)
So we take off go through the Princess and up to Hayden one of my favorite routes, we rode about 70minutes, lots of traffic at this time too, which is not my favorite time of day to go. Wow and the wind so strong working against us, which has to put on an extra 10miles just for working that hard dont ya thing? It was good, we then went for a 35minute run trails around LTF and back for a 30minute swim in the outdoor pool, a little brisk which was good it made me swim faster, good thing, cuz Im not very fast to begin with.
Needless to say a pretty good workout for the day, a nice warm jacuzzi and steam room (my favorite) after made it all worth while!! And we did it such a great feeling!!

Life is a Blessing! (My son and Nephew)

First off I must say I am blessed!! Just to be able to wake up in the morning and feel good, to be alive. We take so many things for granted, and life is to short for that. So thought I would count my blessings today and I have many.
I am so lucky to be healthy enough to be able to swim, bike and run, let alone to fathom an Ironman, wow, life is great!
Last night right after work I went straight to Hot Yoga and it felt good, this was my strengthen and stretch class. I cannot explain to you what an awesome total body workout it is. It is very challenging in a 104 degree room, which allows for easier stretching especially when you are not flexible at all, like my self. I have found out that is from being a runner all my life and now add the biking and swim and you have a tight low back, hip flexors, hammies etc. So stretching is so important to prevent injury and this is also excellent for the spirit and mind also, ya gotta try it.
OK so you are dripping wet when you leave and it lasts almost 90 minutes but you feel so good.
;-) Oh and by the way that blondie is my biggest blessing my son, Johnny and my nephew, Billy!

Saturday Bike

OK so this was a pretty cool day, we started going to Starbucks for caffeine, cuz I really needed it LOL!! Met Chris there and it waz so nice outside and the sun felt so good we had a hard time motiviating ourselves outta there to go get ready for our bike.
So, we talk to Laureen who is about ready to go and realize we need to get in gear. So, we all meet up about 1145 at 56st and doubletree, wow it turned out to be a beautiful day. Then I had the pleasure of finally meeting Georgie and Lisa who I have heard alot about through mutual friends (all good of course). What a ride we ended up doing about 28 - 30 I like to round it up ;-) cuz ya know all that zig zagging n stuff has to add up to a couple extra miles, and trying to miss that poor bunny rabbit, giving Laureen a heads up had to be an extra 1/4 mile at least.
We followed Christines route and she was a fearless leader up all these gigantious hills in paradise valley, man my fat cells were burning ;-) I have this love hate relationship with hills, hate it going up, but love em, I mean I love the speed (gotta need for speed) coming down what a blast!! So we had a good hard workout. In fact I had to take a nap, although that has become more regular as I get older!!
That was not the end, had signed up for the Moonlight Madness Run first one, ever, and it was a great time, although Christine and I wondered if we had lost our marbles, by the time 7pm rolled around, it was put on by Kim and Rick (who I met for first time, nice guy) and low and behold, who do we see again but the die hards Georgie, Lisa and Hollon (great to see em it had a been a while, and in great shape may I add) and it was a great event!!

Cool t-shirts, nice route and they even had a water station on the 5k, wow I was impressed and to top it all off I even recieved a medal which made my night!! I was so happy cuz it was the first really hard run, since my patellar tendonitis, I guess it works giving your injuries a rest. Fun time, then on to the Cave Creek wine bar, (what was it with that Nirvana we heard twice anyway) and of course had to have a little vino to end the night, Hey through all this hard work, there must be fun to be had, it makes it all worth the while. Thanks Christine had a blast... And we even got our brick in...and it rained,...mmmm smelled so good ;-)

Friday Swim

Well Friday was going to be a quick a workout, since out of work late and have a bit of a drive so by time I got to gym it was close to 7pm in the pool and met a friend who was way ahead of me, so did 1000meters/40 laps, felt pretty good, a bit chilly. The thing is I am trying to focus on my technique right now and not necessarily being fast. But, it is darn hard, there are so many things to remember and focus on. Hey this does not feel as easy as it was when I was a kid on the swim team, at least I dont remember it that way ;-)
The best part was the food after, see that is the secret of people who like to workout alot they also like to eat alot and that is the only way to do it if you dont want to end up fat; HA! There is always a motive.

GOTTA HAVE FUN!

So tonight my buddy Christine and I went to a boxing type of boot camp. Hollon had also told me about this and that it can be quite challenging depending on how hard you push yourself, and fun at the same time so figured I would give it a try.
Went straight from work over to Butch's and Vickis house who are Chris's sister and brother in law, he runs it once a week for people who are wanting to improve and get in shape.
It really was fun. After I got my chain back on that had fallen off with help of Chris and Butch, man I need to take another bike maintenance class, just not a technical person at all.
So, greasy hands and all started out where we did intervals of jumping on my road bike riding a certain route, then off the bike for short fast run and back to driveway for set of 10 pushups, and 10 crunches this whole thing went on for a least 30 min or longer, basically it is about pushing your own self, you are basically racing against you, which to me can be difficult but very rewawrding.
Then back to house for stations of boxing, upper body, biceps and some crunches. Alot of boxing and again the technique and foot movement can be hard when you arent very cooridintated LOL. But to really get into it you just think of someone that you really dont like very well, and thre is one person I can think of ;-) , so it was a great stress reliever.
All in all a great workout, Butch was a great guy to hold this at his house, Vicki too, and would love to do it again. Thanks Christine!!

UGH SWIMMING ;-0

Well last night I ended up going to the gym after walking my dog, I cannot neglect him especially now that he is getting old and want to keep em around as long as possible, he has been with us now almost 12 years and we all know how we get attached to the unconditional love of an animal.
So, was pondering hot yoga when I realized I really needed to get in the water as much as swimming seems like such a chore, it is my weakest leak. My run has always been my strongest well started that when I was 12 or 13 so have the most experience and it seems to come natural.
Did a 30min jog on the treadmill, knee a little sore at first but after a few minutes its warmed up and Im feeling pretty good.
Then out to the pool the indoor pool felt cooler than outside so at 8pm at night I am the only one in the pool and it was actually nice, was not gonna kill myself so thought about 1000yds which is about 42 laps would be good, at about 30 laps my feet and legs began cramping up and as much as I tried I could not stretch them enough, so finished with about 34 laps felt good with that, at least I made it to the gym that is about 50% of the workout ;-)

My Buddy Chris

Oh and by the way I need to really begin my blog workouts from last week cuz I started hitting it pretty hard. Tuesday was a brick (15 mi bike and 5 mile run with Laureen and my fingers almost fell off from the cold), Wed. Hot Yoga with Maria to get warmed up again ;-), Thurs. Strength Training and 3 miles. Friday I finally got back in the water (ooh and its kinda chilly, I am such a wimp for the cold) to get my feet wet, again with Christine and Laureen, and then Saturday a brick with Christine, my coach workout buddy (Ironically we met this past summer through the NWLB cycling and found out her Birthday was the same as my Dads and my Birthday the same as her Dads) wow it was meant to be ;-), we went 18 miles and a 4 mile run it was really good, thanks to all my friends who keep it fun and wanna help push me ;-) ANd I REALLY MEAN I AM BLESSED WITH FRIENDS THAT WANNA STAY HEALTHY, THANK GOD!

Brick Wth Mau Mau

Monday rest day this week, Tuesday my new buddy Laureen and I met at LTF for a brick workout!! What a beauty of day, supposed to be 79 today, yes I love Arizona ;-)
We rode through the Princess resort to Pinnacle Peak and back, of course had to check out the new City North and got side tracked and stopped for a quick shot of espresso that oughta keep us going, total bike miles 21 felt good. Then back to the parking lot quick change, well kinda need to work on that transition and off for another adventure find that trail I ran on before by LTF we did manage to find the trail after debating to climb a barbed wire fence we found an opening with a dirt road and on the way back of course we did have to climb one fence just for the fun of it and realized after there was a gate open about 50 yds in front of us, oh well made it a better story anyway, ended with a 3.3 mi, run, yes I am gettting back into this.......

Week of Feb. 1st

Sunday was the big day. Superbowl the Cardinals Wow!! What an exciting game!

Started my day by riding with the NWLB cycling group. BRRR was it cold started around 41 degrees. We ended with 30 plus miles including hills, my legs are working back into this and man were they burning climbing the hills, plus Ive lost some cardio taking a couple months off and I yes I can feel it!! Arent our new jerseys awesome? ;-)

Feb 2009 Time to get Started!!

Well here I go, I could explain the reason for the desire to attempt this gigantic feat to "it all started with my passion and love for the outdoors, being active and exercising and looking for something to take my mind off of other life happenings that sometimes are not so pleasant but we all must have go through them (that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger, isn't that the old silly saying?) which is true to some extent " but in truth if we were all to admit it, I think it comes from ones own desire to prove something to themselves, maybe it is because I have hit my mid forties and the passion to push my body to the limit has taken over, maybe its because in high school I ran and if I had pushed myself then I could have done so much more (fasted mile 5:21) but didn't quite have the drive at that time in my life to much more fun to be had or maybe it is just that I have a little bit of type A in me ;-) and just have to keep setting goals and proving to myself that I can, because life is short and I do not want to miss out on anything, so here I am beginning my journey to my next adventure the "Ironwoman", I have to say that and wish they would give credit where credit is due ;-) I am a woman!!

I have taken a couple of months off really working out/training, because I had fallen back in September prior to my half Ironman and subsequently developed patellar tendinitis. I partook in about 12 sessions of Physical therapy and alot of hot yoga (a very awesome workout not only body but mind and spirit as well) I think my knee is finally on the road to recovery. Am proud that Idid not continue to run that is after my half Ironwoman ;-)
As, I couldn't just not do it, after I had signed up and committed to it, right? So had to go through with it, or I would question my own will. I wouldn't settle for that! So here I am on my next chapter and adventure of my life....hope you will join me...stay tuned ;-)
